New Technologies are allowing countries to transform deserts into farmland and blossom as a rose. As populations grow, countries will need to turn deserts into farmland so that they can feed their people. Scientists from various countries have developed technologies that have enabled them to transform deserts. Israel, Norway and China are examples of countries who have been leaders in transforming deserts into Farmland. They have shown that even the most arid landscapes can turn into amazing paradises.

The successes in these countries could pave the way for the United States to begin transforming their desert lands into farmlands.

The federal government owns about 640 million acres of land in the United States, about 28% of the total land area of 2.27 billion acres. The United States owns vast amounts of lands that many people believe cannot be homesteaded because they are in the desert but if scientists can transform those lands into farmland, an opportunity for many people to own farmland can be created. The land could then be given to homesteaders who could farm the land. The homestead act allowed 270 million acres to be claimed by homesteaders. The homestead act was said to to be a great stimulus to the economy as it created a need for steel barbed wire and other goods. The Oklahoma Land Rush created many towns that sprung up overnight.

Israel has been a leader in developing technologies to transform deserts into farm land. Israel is in the process of showing many other countries how to transform their desert lands with their latest technologies. Israel has water generators that can extract water from the air and purify it. Moisture that is in the air can be turned into water for crops.

Israel has perfected water drip systems that help turn deserts into farmland with minimal water. These drip systems need minimal water that can be used by crops.

Israel also employs enhanced sea water desalination that has supplied 80% of Israel’s water. They have managed to bring the price of desalination way down so that the water can be piped in and turn arid deserts into farmland more cheaply. Most of the earths water is sea water so this can allow countries to use a very abundant resource. Israel also conserves water by recycling water that has already been used.

Norway has also been a leader in transforming deserts into Farmland. A norwegian company has managed to transform desert land into farmland in Quatar and Jordan by using solar power and desalination. They use solar power to operate the desalination system to then be able to water all of the crops on the farm. A land that was once desert can then be an oasis where crops can be grown to feed the people in the area.

China has developed ways in which to transform deserts into farmland in the mongolian desert using blue Algae. They managed to spray the blue algae in the Mongolian desert and saw that the sand turned into soil and attracted moss, lichens and grass. 

Algae can withstand very hot temperatures as well as radiation and drought. Shifting sand has gone from 60 percent to 10 percent and planting coverage went from 15 percent to to 80 percent. Scientists that developed the algae used in the desert believe that the same liquid can transform planets like Mars. Leu, a researcher of Hydrobiology who has studied algae for over 40 years has said “We might use our knowledge of desert algae to transform the environment and help construct a human base on the red planet.” 

These amazing technologies can help countries take millions of acres of desert and turn them into farmland that can feed a hungry growing population. People who do not own land could be allowed to own land that would otherwise be worthless and be able to harvest crops. Homesteaders can then claim their piece of the American Dream and have a piece of land that blossoms like a rose.
